The State Board of Education unanimously approved 100 percent of the 25 new public charter schools recommended by the NC Public Charter School Advisory Council today.  These schools will look to open their doors for the 2013-14 school year.

This decision will offer some needed relief for the over 30,000 children remaining on public charter waiting lists across the state.

State education officials will have to give final approval for each school in March 2013. Until then, the schools must demonstrate they are on track to open.

Once they open in 2013, North Carolina will have 132 public charters operating in 54 of the state’s 100 counties.

The counties with the most applicants approved were Mecklenburg County with 5 schools and New Hanover County with 3 schools. The list of approved schools can be found below. Click on the school name if you are interested in learning more about each public charter school.
