The House Education Committee met today to discuss Senator Berger’s education reform plan (SB 795 “Excellent Public Schools Act“). Some of the major elements of the plan include the elimination of tenure (career status) and a K-3 literacy plan designed to ensure all students are reading at grade level prior to entering 4th grade.
The measure also includes the North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship Program which would allow corporations to receive a tax credit from state taxes for making contributions to non-profit Scholarship Granting Organizations that fund nonpublic school scholarships for students.
Public comment was heard and legislators had the opportunity to ask questions about the measure.
